Many guests who come to Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort, are surprised to learn the meaning of the name Jumby Bay and how famous explorer Christopher Columbus had a hand in Jumby Bay’s past.It turns out Christopher Columbus first discovered the coral reef around Jumby Bay in 1493 and the island was claimed by the British in 1632.
Jumby Bay Island takes its name from “Jumbie”, an Antiguan colloquial for “playful spirit” or some say ghost.
The island was held by a series of owners including a family of sugar planters before the island was developed into an ultra-luxe resort and vacation community in the 1980’s.
Today, Jumby Bay is owned by a passionately committed group of homeowners and the resort is a reflection of their casual elegant island lifestyle.
